Hallicrafters S-38C Receiver
You can find many of the S-38 series radios on eBay. This one was purchased for $19.00. I've restored quite a few of these.
Symptoms:
- Radio works with a bad hum
- Cabinet in poor shape with deep scratches and rust
- Power cord in poor condition
- Dial glass in poor condition
- Back and bottom cover missing
- Insulated feet missing or poor condition
Mechanical Repair:
- Cleaned and sanded all cabinet surfaces
- Cleaned chassis; coated rust areas with Rustoleum
- Cleaned all switches and knobs
- Replaced speaker with new 5” speaker
- Cleaned dial glass and finished with scratch remover
- Re-painted radio cabinet
- Re-lettered front panel with decals
- Constructed new back and bottom covers
- Replaced insulated feet and all hardware with new parts
Electrical Repair:Replaced filter capacitors with 22uf 450v
- Replaced 2 bad tubes
- Replaced power cord and grommet
- Replaced dial light
Radio was sold on eBay for $156.
Not much profit considering the time and work put in to restoring it. |
