Motorola - Model 60xw Wood Radio

March, 2006

Symptoms:

  • Radio doesn’t work
  • Entire cabinet badly scratched & poor condition
  • Speaker grill cloth damaged
  • Speaker cone damaged

Mechanical Repair:

  • Cleaned and stripped entire cabinet
  • Coated with Old English
  • Cleaned chassis
  • Repainted black trim on cabinet
  • Replaced speaker grill cloth
  • Installed felt pads on front knobs
  • Cleaned & lubricated tuning capacitor 

Electrical Repair:

  • Replaced bad 35Z5 and missing 50L6 tubes
  • Replaced 12SA7 metal with glass tube
  • Replaced filters capacitors with pair of 22uf, 450v
  • Replaced .01 coupling capacitor
  • Replaced damaged power cord and grommet
  • Replaced dial lamp
  • Repaired speaker cone     

Notes:

  • Purchased on eBay for $18.00
  • Donated to charity

      Before and After...

      These old wood radios are plentiful, and cheap, on eBay. This one was picked up for $18. But they're usually in this kind of condition. Very poor cabinet , with lots of wear, and they usually don't work!

      At left, after restoring, it looks pretty good for a radio built in the late 30's or early 40's.
